Caveman Tumak is banished from his savage tribe. He finds a brief home among a group of gentle seacoast dwelling cave people until he is banished from them as well. Missing him, one of their women, Loana leaves with him, deciding to face the harsh prehistoric world with its monsters and volcanos as a couple.This movie is everything a prehistoric adventure should be. Forget the fact that dinosaurs and man did not co-exist...this is just as much a fantasy as Jason and the Argonauts or Star Wars .The world of One Million Years B.C. is insanely brutal, where man is the weakest creature in a harsh landscape of volcanoes and giant monsters. The Rock People have lives that are nasty, brutish and short , where only the strongest survive. They are dominated by the rugged chief Akoba, whose two sons Tumak and Sakana are in a constant battle to see who will gain his favor. Sakana gains the upper hand and Tumak is banished into the wastelands. After dodging monsters, he finally arrives at the seaside domain of the Shell People, who are more cultured and civilized. He captures the eye of the beautiful Loana and the two have a non-stop series of adventures.The narrative is direct and primitive, befitting the primeval setting. John Richardson is quite good as Tumak...he is decent but still has a lot of barbarism in him. As for young Raquel Welch, not even the special effects of Ray Harryhausen could outshine her incredible beauty in this film. Even in our own time, gorgeous babes like these are rare...they would be totally impossible in the prehistoric world. The stunning Raquel is pure eye candy and succeeds better in this regard than any other actress in film history. Especially noteworthy is her cat-fight with sultry Martine Beswick, no slouch in the looks department herself.Ray Harryhausen outdoes himself again with brilliant stop motion dinosaurs. Look at the realistic movements of these creatures, which have not been surpassed by CGI. The ravenous Allosaurus who duels with Tumak is a particular stand-out, but the battling Triceratops and Ceratosaur are also pretty cool. The movie also features the more standard giant lizard dressed up and made huge, but even this scene is better than most of its ilk. An eerie scene featuring ape-men and some colossal earthquake and erupting volcanoes round out an exciting picture.Don't look for anything really deep in this one. Just expect primitive action with plenty of monsters, battling cavemen and the awesome Raquel Welch. This movie does everything it sets out to do.

She writes a letter to God, and a Knight rescues her, only to fall into the hands of the Inquisition, put on the rack, and condemned to death like Joan of Arc.It's hard to rave unreservedly about a movie that features a naked sixteen-year-old girl stretched out on a rack and tortured with a pair of metal tongs--a movie whose subject manner includes masturbating priests, lesbian nuns, satanic ritual sodomy, and all other manners of depravity and blasphemy--yet it's a testament to Franco that the film remains highly watchable and even manages to be somewhat of a serious historical indictment of the Catholic church. Since this at first seemed to be another of Franco's sick WIP movies, I was initially curious why he had cast the unknown Susan Hemingway in a role usually played by Lina Romay, but it turned out to be a good choice. You actually feel sympathy for Hemingway's innocent-looking character when she's tortured and sexually abused by corrupt and lecherous nuns and clergy, whereas these scenes probably would have been merely crass titillation if Romay (who was many things but innocent wasn't one of them) had played the role. This movie makes you wonder what Franco could have done if he'd ever made a serious film that did NOT plumb the depths of sexual violence and human depravity. But I guess it wouldn't really be a Franco movie then, would it?

He later helps her to escape, and now free, she goes to find who exactly was behind the death of her parents.Mario Gariazzo's Amazonia: The Katherine Miles Story (1986) is an Italian exploitation film set in the Amazon. Supposedly based on a true story it has plenty of gore, but no actual cannibalism. Elvire Audray plays an 18 years old girl abducted by native tribe and she is pretty terrible actress. Fortunately she is naked through most of the film, so fans of sleaze won't be disappointed. The gore is pretty good (there are numerous decapitation scenes, stabbings etc.) and the film has an obligatory animal cruelty scene. So if you're a fan of Italian exploitation cinema or cannibal sub-genre give this one a look-just don't expect another Cannibal Holocaust (1979).

A book which details the strange adventures of a young girl in a surreal dreamworld is perhaps not a natural subject for a film, but Lewis Carroll's classic has been filmed many times. Few if any, however, of those filmed versions have themselves achieved classic status. The one exception is possibly Disney's cartoon version; this live-action British version from the early 1970s is less well known but is, I think, superior.Unlike the Disney version, this film stays faithful to Lewis Carroll's original text, except in one respect. Carroll probably envisaged Alice as a little girl (although her exact age is not given in the book, and Tenniel's famous illustrations show a strange child-woman with a twenty-year-old head on ten-year-old shoulders). In this film, however, Alice is not a child but a beautiful teenager on the verge of womanhood. Although purists may not approve of this change, in my view it actually strengthens the film, in two ways. The first is that Fiona Fullerton makes an enchanting Alice and brings a wonderful sense of freshness and innocence to the role. Paradoxically, she seems more child-like than would many child-actors, whose stock-in-trade is often a brash knowingness and the ability to seem old beyond their years.The second reason why the film works better with an older Alice is that it attempts to explore the psychological sub-texts of the original novel in a way that the Disney version, for example, did not. The story has a deeper significance than that of merely an entertaining children's story. Alice's bizarre adventures are symbolic of the process of discovery of oneself and of the wider world which constitutes growing up. No doubt amateur Freudians could have great fun interpreting the various incidents, but it is not my purpose here to comment on these interpretations. It is enough to say that Alice must, as must we all, try to make sense of a world which often seems strange and bewildering. Her world is simply a bit stranger than everyone else's is. Given that adolescence is for many of us a difficult, disorientating period, an Alice who is on the border between childhood and adulthood seems entirely appropriate. The title of the film's best-known song, `The Me I Never Knew', strengthens the idea that the book is about the attainment of self-knowledge.Miss Fullerton is ably assisted by a splendid supporting cast, including some of the best-known British comedians of the period (Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Michael Crawford, Spike Milligan, Roy Kinnear) and some actors better known for more serious roles (Ralph Richardson, Michael Hordern). Perhaps the cost of employing so many well-known names emptied the budget, as the sets look rather cheap and crudely made. That, however, is not a serious criticism; indeed, one could even say that the unreal-looking sets contribute to the strange, dreamlike feel of this film. In a surrealist film, realism is not a virtue.

Gwendoline arrives in China in a box, and is helped out of her immediate predicament by a female contact and a devil-may-care adventurer. She's on a mission to find her father, who was last seen searching for a rare butterfly in the Land of the Yik Yak. They confront the evil Cheops in an attempt to find Gwen's lost father and the butterfly, and face many other challenges to their mission.This has been called INDIANA JONES meets BARBARELLA but it's so much more. By ignoring the comic book, Jaeckin has, ironically enough, preserved the graphic form on film. He is, after all (and first and foremost) a fashion photography so his arrogance of story structure leads to the best eye candy you'll see in a long while. Sequences from this film may have resembled Jodorowsky's aborted Dune project had it ever have been made! Sure the first half is pretty slow but it leads into the strangest and most mind-blowing balm-pottery ever to hit celluloid, as Gwendoline and her pals go on a mission to find a rare butterfly, her missing father and a lost civilisation. The city of Yik-Yak itself is some of the best visualisation I've ever seen, not unlike an S+M party in a salt mine. Forget the acting (PLEASE forget the acting) just sit back, listen to the vaguely Michael Nyman-esquire score and watch the mind-blowing images unfold. Otherwise, just pretend you're watching TINTIN: THE MOVIE, as rendered by Peter Greenaway.

It is a legendary softcore flick that was released a few times in the 1970's & 1980's, & I feel lucky to have been able to have seen it on the big screen. I've learned Flesh Gordon started out as a hardcore porno film, but somewhere along the line it was decided to make it a softcore romp. I'm glad they changed the script to softcore, because I find most hardcore films to be hardly memorable or collectable. Flesh Gordon's characters are colorful & lively, & the comedy is anywhere from silly sight gags to sophisticated humor. The plot of the movie is about Flesh Gordon's attempts to save the world from a sex ray that has been putting the earth in carnal chaos. Flesh learns the sex ray is being sent from the planet Porno, & he rockets off with girlfriend Dale & a scientist to save the earth. On the planet Porno he encounters the evil Emperor Wang. Wang is the one who has been sending the sex ray to earth. Planet Porno's Prince Precious helps Flesh in the attempt to stop Wang & his sex ray. Chief Nelly (played by Candy Samples)& her girls of the lesbian underground kidnap Dale. Flesh must try to rescue Dale, & then does battle with a well animated (stop-animation) metal creature. Other creatures are encountered along the way; including Wang's rapist robots, & the penis-looking monsters encountered in a cave. A giant creature that has some humorous lines (voice by Craig T. Nelson of the T.V. show Coach !) also gets ahold of Dale, & in a King Kong style climbs with Dale in its hand to the top of Wang's palace. Adventure abound in this sex comedy! The special effects in this movie are very good for a 1972, low-budget feature! The acting is fine, & all actors seem to achieve what is desired from their parts. The sex is not erotic, and seems to fit more for the storyline. Surprisingly there is a shot or two during the palace orgies that are graphic sexually, but the action is difficult to find if you are not looking all over the screen. I say surprisingly, because Flesh Gordon was advertised in many newspapers as being R-rated when it played at theaters & drive-ins. There is a lot of nudity in the movie; including frontal nudity. The action, adventures, and jokes in the movie roll along nicely, and everyone I have shown this movie to has laughed and enjoyed it!

A cameraman and a reporter head into the jungle searching for the missing son of a TV producer hoping to find a big story. What they get caught up in is a drug war which threatens to take their own lives. Cut And Run is a film that, once again, takes place in the jungle. The film may not be as disturbing as Cannibal Holocaust or some other films by Deodato, but it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. There are no cannibals this time, but there's an atrocious drug-war going on instead, and Deodato is, as usual, not exactly stingy with explicit violence, nauseating gore and genuine nastiness. Horror fans should especially appreciate the casting of Michael Berryman ( The Hills Have Eyes ) who, once again, has the creepiest role in the film. Lisa Blount ( Prince Of Darkness ) and Leonard Mann, whom Spaghetti Western fans might know for films like Forgotten Pistolero or Three Amens For Satan , play the leading roles as a reporter and a cameraman. The supporting cast furthermore includes Italian genre-cinema regulars John Steiner and Gabriele Tinti. The score is delivered by the great Claudio Simonetti, the genius composer and keyboard player of Progressive Rock band Goblin, who is responsible for most of the greatest scores in Italian Horror cinema. The greatest aspect of Cut And Run is the brilliant photography - Deodato sure knows how to to give the jungle the menacing atmosphere of a green Inferno. Cut And Run is certainly not one of his greatest films, but his fans should definitely not miss this violent dose of action-packed Deodato jungle-madness!

An alien, Supersonic Man, is sent to Earth to thwart the plans of evil men who would destroy the galaxy itself with their weapons. Only his superpowers, which include flight, bulletproof skin, and the ability to turn guns into bananas, can save Earth from destruction.A Spanish ripoff of the original Superman movie, the movie is cool for the first two minutes while the exposition for all of this is formed. Then, it happens: the music. The tinny, cheesy music. Then the obviously FAKE blue-screen work that shows our hero as flying through space. Then the movie falls apart as good FX work (laserblasts) and bad FX (the Puma Man flying sequences..no lie!) mishmash together with inadequate dubbing and Cameron 'Mitchel' (?) laughing like his helium was too concentrated. However, the stinger for this episode is when Supersonic Man decides to lift up a bulldozer and, thanks to the amazing art of editing, is shown to pick up this horribly fake particleboard recreation of a bulldozer. It's not even painted well to cover up this shoddy job. Then the regular viewer will lose all respect and this movie will go back to the comedy section of your local Hollywood Video and lay there until Hell freezes over. But if you are a lover of bad movies, this one is a must. If you loved 'Puma Man,' this is FAR more entertaining. Go knock yourself out. The costume of Supersonic Man is quite interesting, unlike the rest of this movie.

A photographer on assignment in the rain forest is ambushed and held slave by a primitive tribe, until the chief's daughter chooses him as her groom. After being initiated by various tortures, he becomes a part of the tribe and helps them against modern dangers and a cannibal tribe they're at war with.Umberto Lenzi's Paese Del Sesso Selvaggio (aka Deep River Savages / The Man From Deep River ) of 1972 is THE pioneering Italian Cannibal flick, and yet it is not necessarily a typical example for the sub-genre. While this may still be extremely violent for the average cinema fan, it is nowhere near as disturbing and outrageously gory as the Cannibal flicks from the early 80s, such as Ruggero Deodato's masterpiece Cannibal Holocaust (1980) or Lenzi's very own Mangiati Vivi (1980) and Cannibal Ferox (1981). The film is often compared to Dances With The Wolves , and it is obvious why. Deep River Savages is built up more like a traditional adventure movie - with the difference that this one features Cannibals. Cannibalism is not the film's main focus however and the Cannibals actually play a very small role. This film mainly explores a Westerner's assimilation to a savage jungle tribe.On a trip through the unexplored jungle between Thailand and Burma, English photographer John Bradley (Ivan Rassimov) gets captured by a primitive tribe, who hold him prisoner for a while. After some time, however, Bradley falls in love with the tribe's beauty Maraya (the ravishing Me Me Lai), who is the daughter of the tribe's chief, and becomes assimilated to the tribe... The film features a lot of sleaze, but it is not nearly as shocking or nauseating as the Cannibal films to come. This is therefore probably the most recommendable Cannibal film for the sensitive when it comes to violence (allthough these people are probably best advised to stay away from the genre in general). Like most entries to the genre the film does feature real animal-killings, so Peta-activists and pals won't be fond of it either. I happen to love meat, however, and the scenes add a lot of authenticity to the atmosphere. The great late Ivan Rassimov (he died in 2003) was one of the greats in Italian exploitation cinema, especially in Cannibal Flicks. As always, Rassimov delivers an excellent performance. Me Me Lai is stunningly beautiful, and she fits extremely well in the female lead of Maraya, arguably the most lovable character ever in a Cannibal flick. THE beauty of the sub-genre, Me Me Lai appeared in this film, as well as Cannibal Ferox and Deodato's Ultimo Mondo Cannibale . Apart from the Cannibal flicks, she sadly did not have many memorable roles before she left the film business in the 80s. Il Paese Del Sesso Selvaggio is THE pioneering Cannibal flick, and yet it is an adventure film and even a romance more than it is a Horror film about cannibals. While Cannibal Holocaust is the only true masterpiece of the sub-genre, this one is also a highly interesting film that no lover of Italian Exploitation-cinema should consider missing. Most of the Cannibal flicks have their own particular qualities, but this one is quite unique. In case you just want to watch two films of the sub-genre, I would personally recommend to make it Cannibal Holocaust and this one.

Soon he meets all the horrors of the medieval society - a peasant war, palace coups, mass executions. To continue to be an indifferent watcher of all these horrors turns out to be simply impossible...

A great European movie, nothing like the Hollywood stereotypes. A few years after the cold war made by people from France and west-Germany and the new Russia. So it has some kind of "pilot character" and is charming. The very famous Strugatzky brothers, well known for their inspiration for "Stalker" by A. Tarkovsky, wrote the book to this movie. (Of course the book is even better). Post-modern people, with possibilities like God confronted with the dark-ages and the moral fight, better than ever seen in Star Trek, that's the stuff the film made with. Just look it and enjoy it, it's far away from main stream. Warning: in the uncut version is more blood and violence than usual for an European movie and even more than a "Schwarzenegger-stealed" watcher would expect.

Three women made an emergency landing on a planet plagued with a fatal disease, but are captured by dictator Overdog. Adventurer Wolff goes there to rescue them and meets Niki, the only earthling left from a medical expedition. Combining their talents, they try to rescue the women.

The credits were funky, the heroic Elmer Bernstein score was sweeping, the dialogue was amusing and the plot was something every 12-year-old boy only wishes he could take part in. After all, what could be more fun than taking your android companion on a simple mission to retrieve 3 female survivors from a destroyed outer space pleasure cruise ship who land on a planet nobody is supposed to go anywhere near?

As Wolfe, the man motivated to rescue the three maidens for some big time "megacredits", Peter Strauss is fantastically watchable. I don't know what it is about him as an actor, but he does try to bring some sense and sensibility to a pretty generic role. Joining this little adventure is Niki, played by a very young Molly Ringwald. Sure, she's annoying and a pain-in-Wolfe's rear end, but who else could you see playing her from that time period? One of the cast members of "The Facts Of Life"? Also included in the cast is Andrea Marcovicci (too bad her part wasn't a bit longer), Ernie Hudson (who always manages to bring some intensity to his roles whether in a good or "not so good" film) and Michael Ironside as Overdog (the opposite of "Underdog"?), the baddie.

Yes, the film consists of a whole lotta cheese; the dialogue borders on laughable (especially by the dwellers on the planet), the special effects don't quite live up to expectations and the plot revolves around a bunch of set pieces that don't seem to make for a consistent story.

Dyanne Thorne is at her campy (and sultry) finest in this second installment of the Ilsa series, delivering juicy dialogue with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Kudos also go to Victor Alexander, who plays the degenerate Sheik El Sharif to the hilt, as well as C.D. Lafleur for his hilarious Henry Kissinger impersonation. Lest anyone should think this is a comedy, well, it is, sorta... It's also one of the most over the top sleaze fests you'll ever witness. As the old saying goes, they don't make 'em like this anymore. As Harem Keeper begins, we find Ilsa at the head of a white slave ring where her primary duty is to train innocent young girls for service in the lecherous El Sharif's harem. When she's not instructing recruits on proper "tongue" technique, Ilsa also busies herself adding to her stable of eunuchs with the help of her lesbian henchwomen, Satin and Velvet. Yes, Ilsa is your classic man-hater, but the frigid ice goddess soon melts in the arms of the studly American diplomat, who's actually a spy intent on overthrowing the sheik's corrupt government. But let's not let trivial details such as story get in the way of a great performance by Ms. Thorne, who shifts between wicked witch and giggly schoolgirl with ease. Marvel as Ilsa succumbs to her own lustful desires and falls under the spell of some good ol' fashioned "manpower!" Think of it as an adult comic book come to life, full of hardcore gore (at least by 70s standards) and softcore sex, and enjoy it for what is is - trashy exploitation at its best.

"Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals" is a sleazy cannibal exploitation sickie made by Joe D'Amato. It has lovely Laura Gemser plus plenty of soft core sex, some nasty gut munching and gore. The soundtrack by Nico Fidenco is quite effective. Laura Gemser plays a journalist Emanuelle who joins an expedition into the darkest and deepest corners of the Amazon after the patient in the lunatic asylum turns out to be sporting cannibal tattoo. The film is loaded with long scenes of sex and masturbation and there are some pretty sadistic gore scenes added for good measure.

Indonesia is a country in turmoil. The people are poor and oppressed by the Dutch Government. However one hope remains in the form of rebel leader Djaka Semboeng. His rebels and his famous fighting ability inspires the people to hang on. Van Shramm, the Dutch representative in Java offers a reward for the death of Semboeng and employs a mighty warrior, the invincible Kobar, to go after him. One short fight later Kobar is dead and Van Shramm turns to a magician for him. The magician resurrects the deadly of enemy of Semboeng, Kieten, to take revenge. Kieten faces Semboeng and defeats him - Semboeng is imprisoned and blinded by the cruel Van Shramm. However Van Shramm's daughter has fallen for Semboeng and frees him. Semboeng again faces Kieten and is overcome by his magic - finally being turned into a pig before escaping the prison! A kindly magician returns Semboeng to his human form and teaches him new skills that he will need as he prepares to face Kieten for the final time.

The star of this Indonesian film Barry Prima is on record as hating every film he ever made, complaining that they are all trash. That maybe so but for the most part they are entertaining trash. This film is exactly that, entertaining trash of the highest order.

This is the first of a series of films with Prima as Jaka Sembung, a hero known as the Warrior. Sembung is an Indonesian native who fights against the colonial Indonesian government for the freedom of his people. He is a real pain and as the movie opens he has been captured by the authorities. Instead of killing him they send him off to work in the quarry breaking rocks. His captivity doesn't last long and he's soon back leading the forces of rebellion. The government is desperate and is reduced to hiring great warriors to try and capture and kill Sembung. Eventually they are further reduced to having a powerful voodoo priest resurrected for the task.

I really like this movie a great deal, its just 90 minutes of action and magic and the perfect thing to unwind with after a long day at work since it requires very little from the view except acceptance. This is the type of movie that popcorn was invented for.

Certainly by no means a well made movie (the fights occasionally appear staged and the make up is low grade) that makes up for pretty much all its short comings in its go for broke, through everything in but the kitchen sink attitude. This movie just keeps piling on the complications as it goes along and if you tune into its wave length there is nothing better. (I even didn't mind its ""Rah Rah! Go Indonesia attitude" which was used to inspire pride in native Indonesian audiences, but to my eyes at least showed a seriousness of cause lacking in most action films)

A word of warning.Despite the films lesser make up effects this is still a bloody movie. Lots of people are shot and killed, there are decapitations, eye gouging, people are graphically crucified and lots of blood flows. Its gruesome. Still if you can get past the blood its a fun movie.

A cameraman and a reporter head into the jungle searching for the missing son of a TV producer hoping to find a big story. What they get caught up in is a drug war which threatens to take their own lives.

"Cut And Run" is a film that, once again, takes place in the jungle. The film may not be as disturbing as "Cannibal Holocaust" or some other films by Deodato, but it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. There are no cannibals this time, but there's an atrocious drug-war going on instead, and Deodato is, as usual, not exactly stingy with explicit violence, nauseating gore and genuine nastiness. Horror fans should especially appreciate the casting of Michael Berryman ("The Hills Have Eyes") who, once again, has the creepiest role in the film. Lisa Blount ("Prince Of Darkness") and Leonard Mann, whom Spaghetti Western fans might know for films like "Forgotten Pistolero" or "Three Amens For Satan", play the leading roles as a reporter and a cameraman. The supporting cast furthermore includes Italian genre-cinema regulars John Steiner and Gabriele Tinti. The score is delivered by the great Claudio Simonetti, the genius composer and keyboard player of Progressive Rock band Goblin, who is responsible for most of the greatest scores in Italian Horror cinema. The greatest aspect of "Cut And Run" is the brilliant photography - Deodato sure knows how to to give the jungle the menacing atmosphere of a green Inferno. "Cut And Run" is certainly not one of his greatest films, but his fans should definitely not miss this violent dose of action-packed Deodato jungle-madness!

A plane crashes in the jungle. One of the survivors gets lost and while trying to find a way out of the jungle he gets captured by cannibals. He is humiliated, stripped naked, and thrown in a hole with a bird for a while. Eventually, he escapes with the help of a cannibal girl and tries to find his plane so he can go home.

Though Umberto Lenzi technically started the cannibal genre with the classic The Man from the Deep River, it was Deodato with Last Cannibal World that kicked the genre in the ass and really got it going, and unlike most films that share this genre, this is actually a good, legitimate movie. The influence this movie had on the genre is easy to see in subsequent films, which borrow heavily from events in the movie (most notably Lenzi's Eaten Alive and the awful Primitif). Too often are very heavy movies considered horrible and a waste of time simply because of the content. People ignore what factors go into a good movie. Good acting, good plot, good dialog, all are present in Last Cannibal World. It's great capture and escape adventure movie, not just obscure and violent trash. Deodato made a select few films that are his masterpieces, and however exploitative and violent they may be, they come together as thrilling and disturbing cinema hits. Last Cannibal World is one of them.

Mr. Rob Harper is in his group flying to Borneo (or somewhere in that region) with his good friend, Rolf, and his pilot and girlfriend, Charlie and Swan. The plane breaks down and they fix it, but have to stay the night because it gets too dark. Well, Swan disappears in the night, and Charlie gets a spike ball looking for her the next morning. Rob and Rolf are lost, and they soon separate in a raft accident. That's when Rob is captured by the cannibal tribe. De-clothing ensues, and Rob is, lets say, "mistreated" over the next few days. It's the beautiful cannibal Pulan, played by Me Me Lai (with implants and all) that gives Rob the chance to escape, even though he treats her like a low animal (except for when he decides she's worth have intercourse with). Be warned, the mysogyny is high in this film, as many cannibal movies are. If that upsets you, you'd better find a cut version. Despite this rape, Me Me realizes Rob's in charge, and actually helps and cares for Rob. Rob finds an old friend in the jungle, but the cannibals are coming back for them. Pulan is killed and eaten as a traitor in an incredibly well done montage going back and forth from Rob to the cannibals. Will he make it back to his plane and escape on time?

This movie is far better than what one may expect because of the heavy content. Yes, the violence and gore is extreme, but all elements present make it a good adventure movie. The plot is superb, and the dialog isn't bad at all, which is usually the problem with such films. There are actually plot twists as well, which is rare for the cannibal genre. Characters you forget about come back to support the film. Any gore monger would be satisfied and then some with this movie. The blood and guts are in enormous quantities, with organs and all intact and close-up. However, there's some rather disturbing images, also, which can make even the hardest gore lovers cringe, particularly the graphic birthing scene. The way the natives kill and then eat people is incredibly brutal, as they rip the rib cage in half and use it as the cooking medium. Massimo Foschi does a great job of portraying the character Robert. He shows sublimely that even though we're on his side and think the natives are the savage bad guys, we ignore the fact that eventually the hate and mal-treatment shown towards him shapes Rob into a savage himself, showing no regard to morals or ethics. This is best shown when Me Me Lai tries to escape, so Rob punishes her by raping her. All of these morals are almost exactly mirrored in Cannibal Holocaust, but in a far more brutal and disturbing way. Of course, however, there are the issues with the animal killings, as six or so are killed on stage, so an uncut version isn't for the animal activist or weak constitutions. Most of these killings are not plot elements, and are mostly unnecessary. The biggest problem I have with it is that the alligator they kill stays alive for most of the time, making the scene almost as disturbing as Cannibal Holocaust's "turtle scene."

A few qualms are present, however. The aforementioned animal killings can seem out of line, though some help for the plot. One hilariously unnecessary scene is Rob messing with the little cannibal kids, who moments before were peeing on his head. I've never had use for such scenes, which seems a lot like comic relief for a brutally intense film. Overall, however, it's a better than average cannibal film, and I'll even go to such lengths as saying it was outstanding. Last Cannibal World isn't a cheesy laugh-fest like most other cannibal movies are, and it's definitely for the better. This is one of Deodato's best work, surpassed only by the incredible and incredibly visceral Cannibal Holocaust. If you enjoyed any other cannibal films even slightly, then this is the next movie for you to see. It is outdone in Italian exploitation only by Cannibal Holocaust and Cannibal Ferox, and was the first great hit for the cannibal genre.

El Topo's surrealism is more slapstick than Jodorwosky's brilliant follow-up, Holy Mountain, making it more akin to a spaghetti western than a psychedelic journey through the subconscious. The director stars as the gunfighter, El Topo (The Mole), who first gives his 7-year old son (played by real life son, Brontis Jodorowsky) a glimpse of manhood in the form of weaponry, then abandons him for a horseback revenge trip focused on a heartless team of raping, pillaging bandits. Along the way, he meets Mara (Mara Lorenzio), whose tough love encourages him to become a monk. On El Topo's new quest, he encounters spiritual leaders and endures a series of personal realizations about his past violence. Absurd moments, such as when the viewer first encounters the bandits sniffing and drooling over high-heeled women's shoes out in the desert, make El Topo satirically wry. Brutal scenes in which rivers of blood run through towns, or people slaughter each other in firing lines, remind the viewer of Mexico's bloody history. The mixture of ironic humor and violence in El Topo encapsulates Jodorowky's vision of a world in which reality and the imagination are fused, yet completely separate. This paradox, of great thematic concern in all of Jodorowsky's films, is most resonant in El Topo when Mara and The Mole sadistically communicate with whips, guns, and knives. As Holy Mountain's religious message centers wholly around The Alchemist's transformation of Jesus, El Topo introduces love between man and woman into the symbolic mix, compensating for the divine settings and imaginative characters that elucidate the protagonist's enlightenment in the later Holy Mountain. Only by viewing the two films as a double feature will one get the full power of Jodorowsky's Buddhist message, one of self-sacrifice and suffering towards a greater end.

El Topo is the classic Mexican film hailed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono enough that it was shown at midnight in many cinemas for years. It is often credited as starting the midnight movie countercultural that helped bring attention to, and build cult film audiences for movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and David Lynch's Eraserhead. In that respect it is far from a mainstream film but it got enough attention that it is celebrated even today. I feel that this is with good reason, as El Topo is one of best films ever made. Alejandro Jodorowsky directs and stars as the title character.

Typical Joe D'Amato/Laura Gemser Emanuelle sexcapade takes place - you guessed it - all over the world. The fearless reporter Emanuelle takes on a sex guru in India, Middle Eastern slave traders, and scummy politicians in America. As with any D'Amato film there are various scenes meant to shock the daylights outta the viewer: the most shocking scene involves a woman having sex with a German shepherd. Yuck!! Still they don't make 'em like this anymore, and that is probably a good thing. Very attractively photographed in New York City and San Francisco. Not as shocking as Emanuelle in America but better than Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals. This review is based on the European hardcore version.
